Have you ever done a yoga class before? You have probably heard that it is good for you physically as well as mentally. A lot of people think about it, but it basically goes in one ear and out the other. I cannot stress the many benefits of yoga. Whenever I do a class, I feel incredibly relaxed afterwards, as if I have just had a massage.
Just to refresh your memory, here are some of the benefits:
Relaxation. When you do a yoga class you are mindful and in the moment. There is no room to think about what you have done or need to do. It clears your mind and you feel calm afterwards.
Reduced heart rate. Due to the breathing in yoga, it helps to reduce your heart rate. As you concentrate on your breathing, and slowing it down, your heart rate will naturally follow.
Physical benefits. Many of us sit at a computer, watch TV or play video games for many hours. We tend to get stiff over time-getting older certainly doesn’t help. Yoga stretches muscles out that you never knew you had.
Mind Body connection. Because you move slowly and stay in poses for a while, you need to focus on your body. It takes concentration, balance, and awareness to do so.
Increased strength. Due to the stretching and holding of poses, it will increase the strength and flexibility of your muscles.
Protection from injury. As your muscles get stronger, it helps to prevent injury. The better physical shape you are in, the less likely you are to pull a muscle or injure yourself. You are also less likely to fall due to your increase in balance.
A sense of oneness. There are others in the class with you, everyone wanting the benefits that it has to offer. There is a sense of community in being with others trying to achieve the same goal.
The great thing about yoga is that you don’t have to have any experience. The instructor will guide you through different levels, whether you are a beginner or expert. This is a class for you, and you pay attention to your body, and the amount that you can handle. Everyone is at different levels, so there is no need to compare you with anyone else. Some days you will be able to do more than other day’s flexibility wise, some days will be better days for balance, and other days better for strength. If you continue to practice yoga, you will notice that you will feel better physically and mentally, that your balance, flexibility and strength will improve.
